ANDINISTAS CEMETERY

Andinistas Cemetery

An almost compulsory ritual for most expeditions within the Provincial Park is to pay a visit, before attempting the ascension of Aconcagua, to the Climbers’ Graveyard where many of the mountains casualties lie. The cemetery reminds visitors that Aconcagua demands the respect - and sometimes the lives - of those who aim for its summit. High altitude mountain climbing can be a dangerous hobby and this is no less so on Aconcagua, which is notoriously challenging even though it is not technically difficult.

The graveyard occupies a small plot located on the southern edge of the Mendoza-Santiago motorway, just a short distance of 1500m from Puente del Inca and 6km from Los Penitentes. At the graveyard, expeditioners pay a silent homage to the men and women who lost their lives while trying to conquer America’s highest peak. A white cross on a small mound dominates the garden, set amidst a valley that gets covered by around 2 metres of snow during the winter months. Although named as a cemetery for mountaineers, not all those who died on Acongagua are buried here, and there are other non climbers who chose this peaceful and remote location as their final resting place.
